USA Rugby is rolling out a new girl’s youth rugby program for the greater Columbus area this summer. This program was made possible through a grant provided by the International Olympic Committee and our sponsor Ivivva by Lululemon.
Rugby has been one of the fastest growing Olympic sports in the U.S. and is currently recognized by the NCAA as an emerging sport for women. Many women and girls got their first taste of rugby during this past summer’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The physicality and speed of the Women’s USA Eagles Sevens team made many national broadcasts and helped the USA fan base get behind the newest Olympic sport. On NBC’s Today, Captain Jillion Potter taught actor Matthew McConaughey the finer points of scrummaging, one of the most unique and well-known aspects of the sport.
Leading this exciting new program will head coach, Sharyn Beodeker. Coach Beodeker was a former three time All-American at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. “We have a phenomenal youth rugby scene in Columbus, but this represents the first girls’ only opportunity to play without traveling out of the Columbus area. We know offering a single gender options is an important step to recruiting more girls to rugby in Columbus.”
Requests for youth rugby programs for girls has soared in response according to USA Rugby. The new league, “Try on Rugby Columbus”, offers opportunities for women and girls (Ages 7-17) to get involved and receive support through the all girls’ flag-rugby league offered in Polaris, OH. An all-female staff of coaches will be mentored and certified through USA Rugby’s educational programs and cultivated from local collegiate and adult rugby players.
“We are incredibly excited to support this Try on Rugby program in Columbus. This program will not only introduce new female athletes into the game, but will help us grow a network of female coaches and leaders in the community,” said USA Rugby Youth Programs Manager, Mike Lovinguth. “Our partnership with the International Olympic Committee and Ivivva will help make this a community and global project that helps us grow the game across the country.”
Ivivva, the girls’ brand from active wear giant Lululemon, has also partnered with the league to offer character building, goal setting and yoga instruction as part of the league practices. Rugby has always been a sport concerned with building athletes on and off the field in positive ways. Ivivva offers a unique experience for girls to connect the values of the sport with their off-the-field pursuits.
