A letter from Rugby Ohio's General Manager

March 23, 2020

To the teams, coaches, parents, referees, trainers, Rugby Ohio staff, and all concerned about the current impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 Spring season:

First, many thanks for all you do for the sport and the young people that play under the USA Rugby and Rugby Ohio umbrella.  To us at Rugby Ohio this year seems to be the most challenging year in memory so far.   USA Rugby has suspended all practice and games until May 31, 2020. This decision has resulted in cancellation of the Spring competition schedule for Rugby Ohio.

And yet, the situation is evolving every day.  Rugby Ohio has access to and scheduled discussions with multiple entities who can guide us in the right direction.  Rugby Ohio monitors and receives information from other organizations such as Ohio school districts, OHSAA, hospital administrators, the CDC, the Federal Government, and the State of Ohio.  As well, we monitor rugby activity and actions being taken by Major League Rugby, Premiership, and USA Rugby national teams.  Given that Rugby Ohio is a USA Rugby State Rugby Organization, how USA Rugby moves forward will have some impact on timing and economics of a shortened or cancelled season.  Regardless of the USA Rugby position relative to competition schedules or CIPP refunds, Rugby Ohio will need to take some time to evaluate options and the mechanisms for any refunds or credits for Spring 2020 paid registrants.

While some teams have registered and not played, others have played.  The USA Rugby CIPP costs have already been paid and are not under control of Rugby Ohio.  Rugby Ohio has incurred preliminary seasonal costs and other fixed annual administrative costs. All of those are currently being evaluated. It is unknown whether school districts will extend the school year and if there would exist potential opportunity to extend rugby competition as well.  Recall that summer sevens, select side play, and other rugby activities take place for Rugby Ohio registered players beyond the scope of local competition.  It is quite possible that recreational teams may resume play regardless of the implications of school calendars.  In addressing the possibility of refunding registration fees, the Rugby Ohio Board has already been planning for several potential scenarios.  The Rugby Ohio Board of Directors appreciate your patience with our situation.  Rugby Ohio will always consider the safety of players, will coordinate with USA Rugby for required insurance coverages for Spring and Summer, and will act in a fair and equitable manner to those players who will experience a diminished or cancelled season.  The Rugby Ohio Executive Committee has targeted April 3, 2020 to finalize a refund policy and to share our plan to control costs while still anticipating a full Fall 2020 season. Please stay well and follow the COVID-19 hygiene guidelines.

Dear Rugby Community,

Thank you for your patience as we all work through a dynamic situation with COVID-19.

All of us at Rugby Ohio are looking forward to a great season of competition, camaraderie and achievement.  The health and safety of our players, their families and our communities are of the utmost importance and must be prioritized at this time.

Governor DeWine has closed all Ohio schools, public and private, until at least April 3rd.  Rugby Ohio is following the advice of multiple agencies, state governments, and hospitals to suspend all practices and matches during that time or until we have new information.  Any activities during this time are not sanctioned and CIPP insurance eligibility is at risk.

Rugby Ohio has developed several options for the scheduling of matches for the balance of the season.  These will be shared with everyone as soon as it is practical to do so. The first option involves return to play beginning April 4th.

Please take every precaution to prevent the spread of the virus.  The sooner this is managed, the sooner we will all be back watching our favorite ruggers in action.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Dear Rugby Community -

As the transmission of COVID-19 continues, Rugby Ohio will periodically issue communications regarding our scheduled programs.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has recommended that activities involving large gatherings be suspended. Schools are taking drastic steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. These situations are evolving rapidly, with some closures of schools already in place.

Rugby Ohio is postponing the start of the regular season which was scheduled to begin, for high school programs, Monday. The games scheduled for the week beginning March 16th are at least postponed and may be cancelled. Updates will follow as we have more information for you.

The Youth Camps scheduled for this weekend in Columbus and Cincinnati are also cancelled. We will reschedule if possible.

We want to remind everyone to remain vigilant in taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Please stay in touch with updates from your local community.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
