Program details
Middle school children from grades 6-8 are invited to learn to play rugby in this introductory league to the sport. There are four leagues with each one centralized in a corner of the city (northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast). Each league will be comprised of several teams that will play each other, so travel will be minimal. Teams will have the option of scheduling an inter-league game.
Practices will start April 15 and games will start April 24 through May 21.
Practices will be held two times a week for one hour at a time and one weekend match that will last 30 minutes (2 15-miute halves). After two of the matches there will be a pizza party for the teams to get together and hang out -- something rugby teams at all levels do after a game. This nurtures good sportsmanship.
The Columbus Youth Rugby League is non-contact. Players will wear flags to simulate tackles.
Teams will be coached by experienced rugby players who are certified by USA Rugby as non-contact coaches and officials.
The cost of the program is $50 and every player gets to keep a t-shirt and rugby ball!
